**“It’s Not You, It’s Photosynthesis”**
Milli stood in the park at exactly 5:07 p.m., hands shoved into his jacket pockets, staring at the oak tree like it had personally betrayed him.
Which, honestly, it kind of had.
“I just think,” Milli began, clearing his throat, “we’ve grown in different directions.”
The oak tree rustled gently in the breeze. A leaf fell. Dramatic, as always.
“Don’t do that,” Milli said. “Don’t drop leaves like you’re shocked. You *knew* this conversation was coming.”
They’d been together for three years. Three long, strangely fulfilling years of quiet companionship. Milli talked; the tree listened. The tree photosynthesized; Milli… emotionally projected. It worked. Mostly.
But lately, things had felt off.
“You’re rooted here,” Milli continued, pacing. “And I get it, okay? That’s who you are. But I can’t keep being the only one who moves. I want to travel. I want to change. I want to date something that can legally come indoors.”
A stronger gust of wind shook the branches. Acorns clattered to the ground like punctuation.
“Oh, so now you’re throwing things,” Milli muttered.
He stopped pacing and leaned against the trunk, softer now. “You never text back. You never call. Every time I ask how your day was, it’s just… silence. I can’t keep translating leaf movement into emotional availability.”
The tree stood tall, solid, patient. As always.
“That’s the problem,” Milli said quietly. “You’ll still be here tomorrow. And the day after that. And I’ll still be… stuck, if I stay.”
Another leaf drifted down and landed on Milli’s shoulder.
He picked it up, sighed, and smiled sadly. “I’ll miss you. You were a good listener. Great shade. Incredible stability.”
Milli stepped back.
“So… goodbye.”
He walked away down the path, not looking back.
Behind him, the oak tree stood unmoving, rings thick with memory, leaves whispering to the sky.
Somewhere deep in its bark, if trees could feel, it understood.
And it kept growing anyway. 🌳
